Matisse has the most beautiful use of colour and shape, creating pieces with small imperfections which often look like works in progress as opposed to the final masterpieces they really are. I find his cutouts particularly inspiring as he explores layers, positive and negative, innovative composition and scale, from the intricate to the larger than life. Matisse draws most of his inspiration from nature and the human form; inspite of his fairly limited approach his outcomes are so varied and exciting.
