C O N C E P T

I'm currently exploring how digital printing can be used to mimic the spontaneous imperfections achieved through screen printing. Looking at Marni's Autumn Winter 2011 collection is really inspiring; the approach to repeating pattern is reminiscent of Ellsworth Kelly's cut up drawings, 'study for meshers' and 'brush stokes cut into 49 pieces and arranged by chance,' as the order and structure are disturbed in areas where the pattern is not perfectly aligned creating a sense of movement; this is especially visible in the painterly check and zig zag stripe designs. I am interested in exploring the concept of imperfection in design in reaction to the latest move towards impeccably printed digital designs which to me seem stagnant and overly predictable as you can look at one small section of a design and know what the whole surface will look like.
