I N P U R S U I T O F I M P E R F E C T I ON

The Design Museum is currently hosting its annual exhibition of the work of their Designers in Residence entitled 'The Persuit of Imperfection'. This years designers are (from top) Simon Hasan, Will Shannon, Hye-Yeon Park and Jade Folawijo.

Hye-Yeon Park's 'Autonomous Clock' explores the concept of time and how it is read and displayed. The clock functions as a clock only when it detects someone near, the rest of the time the display spells out words such as 'HI' as well as creating patterns which slowly appear and disappear.

I find the work of product designer Simon Hasan particularly inspiring; he talks of how 'the future of product design is about the partnership between crafts and mass production. How can you take something with inherent qualities of a craft object; it's texture, it's richness and it's contextual story, and how you can fuse that or make it work in a way that's suitable for volume production'. This balance between the art or craft of making and the issues of putting something into production are an on going battle so it's really interesting to see how Hasan has explored this. There are films based on the exhibition available at Crane TV
