Today I visited the Sean Scully: Change and Horizontals exhibition at the Timothy Taylor Gallery. I studied his work at school so it was amazing to see some of his large scale works in an exhibition. It was really interesting to see Scully's notebook sketches which are so dynamic and free; especially in comparison to the ordered block and stripe paintings he's so renowned for. Also on display were Scully's 1974 series of masking tape paintings. The layers of tape and paint give the canvases an intriguing surface quality as smooth stripes of subtle relief give contrast to the cross hatch canvas.
