Marimekko's latest collection is entitled, 'Sääpäiväkirja', meaning Weather Journal. To build the collection designer Aino-Maija Metsola drew inspiration from the elements; studying rain, fog, light and wind as well as the effect weather has on us. Experimenting with mark making and materials Metsola created multiple studies of atmospheric rain filled clouds and moody stormy skies. It's really interesting to see just how much work goes into the creation of Marimekko's original collections; the moodboards provide an insight into Metsola's inspiration whilst the colour, material and mark experiments highlight the lengthly but exciting process of making. I particularly like the drawings where soft watercolour marks are layered with definite pen lines and solid, dark patches of intense colour.
