Just discovered this article 10 days too late! Julian Roberts is a fashion designer who teaches 'subtraction' pattern cutting, an approach which encourages elements of chance and even urges you to make mistakes. Instead of using blocks you explore 2D shapes which are then put together to make a garment. I'll have to look out for his next workshop; would be interesting to combine chance patterns with chance garments and this sounds like a less daunting and much more fun approach to pattern cutting.
